Abstract

AFNIC’s International College aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technologies among registries, especially registries from the developing countries.

In the general context of WSIS, the International College has worked on a project named CODEV/NIC, whose accomplishments will be presented in Tunis during the 2^nd Summit. CODEV/NIC intends to help several registries from developing countries (Ivory Coast, Algeria, Gabon) to set up an integrated information system allowing them to manage and publish an online “whois”, that is to say the holder and contacts of their domain names. This system will have for consequence to make the registration process easier and to increase the number of registrations.

CODEVNIC’s approach is inspired by International College’s philosophy. It gives some open technologies to the registries and teach them to set up and use these technologies. This process is necessary because of the diversity of the rules implemented in the registries, which forbid the implementation of standardized software.

After a workshop in AFNIC, CODEV/NIC’s members will come back in their registries and set up their own whois integrated system. A member of AFNIC’s staff will assist them in their work and will visit them in their respective countries.

CODEVNIC’s purpose is to help these several registries to equip themselves with tools that will allow them to serve their ambitions in terms of Internet development, through key knowledges and technologies.
