Switzerland emphasizes the fact
that all the participants to the WSIS in Geneva share a common project:
“bridging the digital divide, strengthening cultural diversity, respecting
freedom of expression and freedom of press”. Access to the Internet will
have to be financed, specially for the most disadvantaged regions. But to
surf on the network, the people have to be able to read. Therefore literacy
campaigns must be developed. If we want the full access, it is necessary to
ensure that the web is available in every language. It is also important to
ensure an independent role to journalists and media.
Switzerland, a country with four official languages and cultural diversity,
was able to guarantee equal access to information technologies. For example,
in Switzerland each linguistic group has its own public television channels
and radio stations. All of this is a based on solidarity and political will.
