The
People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria is determined in intensifying
the input of ICTs. It wants to equip the 22.000 educational establishments
with microcomputers, and to install information networks inside as well as
between universities and centers of vocational training. Algeria emphasizes
that since 2001, a telecommunication infrastructure is functioning in the
country, with 15.000 kilometers of fiber optic cables that provide
high-speed multimedia communications. ADSL broadband access is already
operational in Algeria. All this progress is the result of combined efforts
from the public and private sectors. Development and innovation are also
playing an important role in this economic revival process. The creation of
a cyber-park in the new town of Sidi-Abdallah is one example of that.
The
integration and participation of all in the building of the information
society depends of mutual understanding and respect between cultures and
languages. Media must have an active role in promoting the freedom of
expression and in strengthening democratic practice. Algeria considers that
Internet security and protection of intellectual and industrial property are
important aspects in the new Information Society. Its ambition is to
transform Africa into a developed continent : it must no longer be a
synonymous of an economic and social underdeveloped continent, with famine
and war.
